PhD programme in Political Sciences

● The student studies nine courses, distributed as follows:
Seven compulsory courses.
Two optional courses from among the courses offered by the faculty for doctoral students.
● The study takes place through research seminars in each course. The research circle depends on multiple references and is in accordance with the methodology and standards of scientific research.
● The study of each of the nine courses takes four credit hours for a period of four weeks as a minimum and may exceed that according to the abilities of each student, after which the competency and knowledge test of the student is held in the course from which he finished, then he begins in another course in the same manner, and so on.
● The student is assigned two hypothetical courses that the faculty selects from among the courses studied by the student at the undergraduate level, and this is a practical training for the student that is evaluated in eighteen credit hours. The student must divide each course from twelve to fourteen brief lectures, and the student submits each lecture in the form of a written summary of its topic in Word or PDF format, accompanied by a video recording of it in the student’s voice using the Power Point programme of no less than ten minutes and no more than About twenty minutes.
● Study courses in the first year The student has the right to extend the study there for a period not exceeding a second year.

● The requirements for obtaining a doctorate in political science are ninety hours accredited according to the study plan approved by the University Council, and these requirements are distributed according to the following programmes:
1- Research courses of thirty-six credit hours.
2- A scientific dissertation with thirty six credit hours.
3- Practical training of eighteen credit hours.

Requirements for registering a PhD thesis topic in political sciences
● It is required that the student pass the stipulated courses of at least 70%.
● The student has obtained a TOEFL certificate with a score of at least 450, or its equivalent, or obtained a corresponding certificate in the French language, except for those who have obtained a first university degree in one of the two languages, or in one of the two languages.
● The learner submits an application to the university administration to register the thesis accompanied by a proposed topic in one of the sub-specialized tracks.
● If the initial approval is achieved on the subject’s title, the faculty council assigns a supervisor to guide and follow up the student in preparing the plan.
● The research plan includes the importance of the topic and a critical presentation of previous studies in it, specifically the research problem, then defining the methodology of the study and its main hypotheses or questions that you want to answer, and the division of the study and its sources.
● The student presents his proposed plan in a scientific seminar, discussing the plan as a topic and an approach.
● The student modifies his plan based on the professors ’notes in the seminar if he is asked to amend.
● After the seminar, the plan is presented to the faculty council to take a decision regarding registering the topic.
● In case of approval, the decision of the faculty council is presented to the university council to approve the registration, and the date of registration is calculated from the date of approval of the university council.

Discussing the thesis and awarding the degree
● The minimum thesis preparation period is one year and nine months starting from the date of approval of the University Council to register the subject, and the maximum is four years that can be extended for an exceptional fifth year, upon the recommendation of the supervisor and the approval of the Faculty Board, provided that the total period of the student’s enrollment in the degree does not exceed six years.
● The supervisor submits a semi-annual report that includes what has been accomplished, and what is required in the remaining period.
● After the student completes the thesis and the supervisor’s review of it, the supervisor submits a report to the university administration stating its validity for discussion, including an evaluation of the student’s performance during the thesis preparation period of 140 degrees, along with submitting a complete copy of the thesis signed by him, and a letter with the names of the discussion and judgment committee proposed by the professors of the specialty, for presentation on Faculty Council.
● It is required, before discussing the student, that at least fifteen days have passed from the date of the examination committee approval of the faculty.
● The validity period of the committee formed to discuss the thesis is six months, and it may be renewed for a similar period based on a report from the supervisor and the approval of the faculty council.
● Each member of the committee writes a detailed scientific report on the validity of the thesis for discussion, assessing the dissertation of 420 degrees, and it is taken with the average of the three degrees.
● A student may not be discussed unless he obtains at least 70% of the supervisor’s evaluation of his performance and the committee’s evaluation of the thesis in the individual reports.
● After the discussion, a group report is submitted, signed by all committee members, with a 140-point evaluation of the dissertation.

  • After the faculty approves the student’s results, a doctoral degree is awarded at a rate calculated from the average total of the courses and thesis scores.
  • After obtaining the approval of the university council to grant a doctorate degree, the student is entitled to obtain secure certificates notarized by the university stating that he obtained that degree, in order to present them to the various authorities.

The duration of study for a PhD in political science in all disciplines is three years as a minimum, and six years as a maximum.
In the first year, the student studies no less than eight subjects, and the study is through research seminars in each academic course, and the research circle depends on multiple references and is according to the methodology and standards of scientific research.
In the second and third year, the student will attend a general seminar for the topic of the scientific thesis that he will prepare and present for discussion
The general seminar is discussed by the scientific committee at the university and the title of the scientific thesis is approved
The student works to complete his thesis under the supervision of the supervisor determined by the University Presidency based on the proposal of the College Deanship
The student completes his scientific thesis and presents for discussion before the committee formed by the university presidency in an open session and completes the requirements for the doctoral degree

The scientific thesis is prepared by the student within a period of time not less than one year and nine months and not more than four years

1) A student is deemed to have passed any of the program’s decisions if he achieves a final score of not less than 60%. He is also considered successful in the doctoral project if he obtains a mark (granted by the jury) of no less than 70%.
After the student presented the results of his project before the committee, and discussed with him about its technical content.
2) The student is not entitled to submit to discuss his thesis until he has published two scientific papers in an accredited peer-reviewed journal
3) The student obtains a doctoral degree certificate after he has fully fulfilled the academic requirements for this degree
